At least 10 people, including three children, tragically lost their lives in a fatal accident early Wednesday morning on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
According to a Vanguard news report, the accident occurred around 2:15 a.m. at Abule-Osun, inward Iyana-Iba, when a commercial bus collided with a stationary truck.
The accident involved a Toyota Sienna bus, packed with passengers, and a parked SHACMAN truck loaded with granite. The bus, reportedly speeding, crashed into the truck from behind. According to the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, the crash was caused by excessive speeding.
“Unfortunately, 10 passengers lost their lives in the incident, while three others were critically injured,” said Oke-Osanyitolu. The victims include three men, four women, two young girls, and one young boy.
An eyewitness, Anthony Ogah, explained that the bus, which was heading from the eastern part of the country, crashed into the truck, which was blocking half of the road. Emergency responders, including LASEMA, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Lagos State Ambulance Service, rushed to the scene to assist the victims.
“One of the two surviving female adults later died, but the two children who were rescued are receiving treatment at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital,” Oke-Osanyitolu added.
The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the mortuary by the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit. Both the damaged bus and the stationary truck have been cleared from the road to restore traffic flow.
