At least 10 people were killed and 25 others injured in a mass shooting at a secondary school in Tumbler Ridge, a community located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in British Columbia.
Officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) entered the school following reports of gunfire.
Authorities later confirmed that a suspect was found dead, with injuries believed to be self-inflicted.
Investigators say they have identified the alleged shooter but have not released further information in order to protect the integrity of the investigation and privacy considerations, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
Police have not disclosed whether the suspect was an adult or a minor. Initial descriptions from law enforcement characterized the suspect as a female wearing a dress with brown hair, according to local outlet CJDC-TV News.
“The original suspect is believed to have been located deceased. Work continues to determine whether a second suspect was involved and the total number of victims involved,” said Staff Sergeant Kris Clark.
Authorities are continuing to examine the possibility that another individual may have been involved in the attack.
Earlier in the day, the RCMP issued an emergency alert urging residents of Tumbler Ridge and nearby areas to remain indoors.
People were advised to shelter in place, lock their doors and avoid leaving their homes or businesses.
Two victims with serious injuries were airlifted to hospital following the shooting, according to local media reports.
