UCL: Chelsea qualify for semis despite home defeat to Porto
Chelsea have made it into the last four of the UEFA Champions League despite losing 1-0 at Stamford Bridge to Portuguese side, FC Porto.
Both sides failed to get the spark required to break the deadlock for well over 90 minutes with the game needing a goal to send the fireworks into the sky.
There were few chances, which were not converted with the Blues putting in a good defensive performance to keep Porto at bay until the final minutes when substitute Mehdi Taremi scored an exceptional goal at 90+3′.
Taremi beat Mendy with an overhead kick but the visitors left it too late to give themselves a chance of beating Chelsea.
The goal was however not enough to force Thomas Tuchel’s men into a possible extra-time as Chelsea sailed through to the semi-final with a 2-1 aggregate win.
Chelsea have reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the eighth time, more than any other English side in the competition’s history.
FC Porto have been knocked out of the Champions League knockout stages on 14 occasions, with 50% of those eliminations coming at the hands of English sides.
Also, Porto have been knocked out by an English team on each of the last three occasions they’ve reached the knockout rounds (also Liverpool in 2017-18 and 2018-19).
There were just three shots on target in this match (1 for Chelsea, 2 for Porto), with two of these coming in added time at the end of the match (Christian Pulisic for Chelsea and Mehdi Taremi’s late winner).
