Tribunal affirms Ned Nwoko as Delta north senator
The Delta State Election Tribunal has affirmed Senator Ned Nwoko of the Peoples Democratic Party as the rightful winner of the Delta North Senatorial Election. The Tribunal dismissed a petition filed by Ken Kanmma of the Labour Party on the grounds of lacking merit.
In a unanimous decision, the Tribunal found that Kanmma failed to substantiate his allegations of non-compliance with the electoral laws. The Tribunal also dismissed a separate petition filed by Senator Peter Nwaoboshi of the All Progressives Congress against Nwoko.
In a separate development, the Tribunal ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to organize a supplementary election in the Warri South Local Government Area of Delta South Senatorial District. The Tribunal made this order in response to a petition filed by PDP candidate Michael Diden.
Diden contested the victory of APC candidate Joel Onowakpo-Thomas in the Delta South Senatorial District election. Diden and his party argued that Onowakpo-Thomas was not legitimately elected by a majority of lawful votes and that his election violated the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.
The Tribunal accepted Diden’s arguments and ordered a supplementary election in Warri South, where the election had reportedly been canceled. The supplementary election will be held within 90 days.
