The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Benneth C. Igweh, has ordered a clampdown on all vehicles on Abuja roads with a single or no number plate.
This move comes in response to increasing cases of armed robbery, known as “one chance,” across the territory.
In a statement issued on Saturday night, Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh said, “The CP has ordered that vehicles with one or no plate number should be impounded, and the driver arrested for prosecution.”
Adeh explained that most cases of “one chance” robberies were associated with “vehicles with single or no number plates.” These crimes have alarmed the public, who are questioning the police’s effectiveness in addressing the issue.
Several unsuspecting citizens have lost their lives and valuables due to these robberies. Many residents have been found dead along roadsides after being declared missing by family members following a “one chance” robbery in the nation’s capital.
The police commissioner also warned car dealers in the territory against parking their vehicles in unauthorized lots and driving beyond the stipulated time of 6 pm. “Defaulters will face the full wrath of the law,” Adeh stated.
She noted that these actions are against section 25 (5) of the Federal Capital Territory Road Transport Regulation Act, 2005.
