Police begin trial of Ekiti Cop involved in accidental killing

The orderly room trial of a police officer who accidentally shot two young men dead in the Omisanjana area of Ekiti state state has commenced.

The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed this on Thursday, disclosing that the trial was coming after an investigation had been carried out on the incident.

According to the PUNCH, it was reported on May 29 that two young men were mistakenly killed by a bullet from a policeman’s gun in the state.

Witnesses had reported that the incident occurred around 10 pm on May 28.

According to the reports, there was an accident in the area, and some irate youths attempted to mob the driver and set the vehicle ablaze.

The police were said to have been contacted to calm the situation, but the youths showed no sign of backing down when the officers arrived.

In the process of trying to disperse the youths, there was an accidental discharge from one of the officer’s guns, which hit two of the youths.

It was further gathered that though the victims were rushed to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, they did not survive.

Reacting to the incident, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, had said, “The officer responsible for the shooting has been disarmed, arrested, and detained and shall be made to face disciplinary action immediately.”

The command added that it would ensure justice is served on the matter.

“After an investigation, the command has commenced the orderly room trial of the officer who was responsible for the fatal shooting of two persons around the Omisanjana area of Ado-Ekiti, on 28/05/2024.

“The CP assures the family members of the deceased and the general public that justice will prevail at the end of the day,” the statement read.
