Police arrest LP chair Abure

Published

The Edo Police Command has officially announced the apprehension of Barrister Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, in Benin City, the capital of Edo State.

According to Tijani Momoh, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force Zone 5, Abure’s arrest stems from a petition filed against him alleging assault, molestation, and illegal possession of firearms.

Abure was reportedly in Benin City for the Edo LP Governorship primaries slated for Friday, February 23, aimed at selecting the party’s candidate for the September 21 elections.

Momoh stated, “I can confirm the arrest of Julius Abure, the factional chairman of the Labour Party, and four others. The arrest follows a written petition endorsed by the AIG Zone 5, originating from the office of the Inspector General of Police.”

The accusations against Abure include attempted murder, supported by video evidence showing the petitioner being assaulted and beaten during a previous visit for ward matters.

The charges against Abure and his associates encompass attempted murder, conspiracy, illegal possession of arms, and related offenses. The police confiscated a short gun and three rounds of ammunition from the suspects.

Investigations are ongoing, and further details will be disclosed in due course, according to the police spokesperson.

As of the latest update, the Labour Party has not issued a statement regarding the incident.
