Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang recently hosted the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Olubumi Kuku, in a strategic meeting aimed at improving Yakubu Gowon Airport’s status.
The meeting focused on elevating Yakubu Gowon Airport in Jos to a cargo airport and eventually an international airport.
Mutfwang welcomed Olubumi Kuku, the first female Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of FAAN, expressing gratitude for the Airport Authority’s dedication at Jos Airport. He expressed confidence in Kuku’s leadership to transform the airport’s fortunes.
Governor Mutfwang highlighted that Plateau State is rich in agricultural produce, especially vegetables, which are in high demand worldwide.
He pointed out that enhancing the airport’s status would significantly help in exporting these products.
He mentioned that his administration had formed a committee, including former aviation staff, to develop a plan for improving infrastructure to ensure effective airport services.
Mutfwang said, “The Managing Director’s visit has sparked hope and confidence that the Jos Airport will receive the necessary intervention for its upgrade.”
He assured that the state government would provide the necessary cooperation and intensify its efforts to ensure the airport receives a new lease of life.
FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubumi Kuku, acknowledged the strategic location of Jos Airport within the aviation industry and assured that it would receive the required attention. She said, “The airport was designated a cargo airport due to Plateau’s centrality in Nigeria and promised to ensure that it is upgraded.”
Kuku emphasized the need for major infrastructure improvements at the Jos Airport to enhance its operations to meet international standards.
A committee comprising members from the Plateau State Government and the Airport Authority has been tasked with developing a plan for upgrading the Jos Airport.
