Seven-time Wimbledon winner, Serena Williams, was left in tears as she was forced to retire on a slippery Centre Court on Tuesday after suffering an injury to unseeded Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion who was 3-2 up in the first round was forced to seek treatment as she was clearly in pain but she returned moments after Sasnovich drew level by 3-3.
The American sixth seed’s bid for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles crown ended in tears when she sank kneeling to the grass before being helped off the court.
Reacting on her official Instagram page, she said, “I was heartbroken to have to withdraw today after injuring my right leg.
“My love and gratitude are with the fans and the team who make being on centre court so meaningful. Feeling the extraordinary warmth and support of the crowd today when I walked on – and off – the court meant the world to me.”
