PDP demands probe of Edo APC gov candidate over policeman’s death
The Peoples Democratic Party is calling for an investigation into the All Progressives Congress and its governorship candidate, Monday Okpebholo following the death of a police officer in Benin City, Edo State, on July 18, 2024.
In a statement released in Abuja on Monday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, said, “Our party insists that beyond the reported offer of scholarship to the children of the deceased policeman, the APC leaders who orchestrated the violence must face justice.”
Ologunagba criticized the APC for what he described as a “criminal and reckless show of force by their thugs,” which led to the officer’s death. He added, “The PDP maintains that the APC leaders must not be allowed to hide under the guise of the scholarship to cover their complicity. We urge that the family of the slain police officer and the public demand a full investigation and prosecution of those involved.”
The PDP also urged the Inspector General of Police to thoroughly investigate the violence. They pointed to “pictorial and video evidence” suggesting that thugs mobilized by the APC were responsible for the unrest. Ologunagba said, “From their conduct, it is clear that the said APC leaders have no value for human life and believe they can cover up their crime.”
The PDP extended their condolences to the family of the deceased officer and called on the police to ensure that justice is served. They stated, “We again commiserate with the family of the slain police officer while urging the police to ensure that those responsible for his death do not escape justice.”
