Gunmen release ex-Delta commissioner after 11 days in captivity

Gunmen have released Joan Mrakpor, a former federal lawmaker, and ex-Delta state commissioner for technical education after she was held captive for 11 days.

Mrs. Mrakpor, an evangelist and politician, was freed late on Friday night.

The release was confirmed by the Police spokesperson in the state, Bright Edafe who made it known to newsmen that Rt. Hon. Joan Onyemaechi (Ada-Anioma) has been released by her abductors.

The former lawmaker was kidnapped on July 30 at her church along DBS Road in Asaba. During the attack, gunmen shot and killed a police officer assigned to her and another person. Several others were injured, according to Leadership newspaper.

It is not clear if a ransom was paid for her release. Her abductors had initially demanded N1 billion.

Joan Mrakpor is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State. She served in the Delta House of Assembly from 2007 to 2015, representing Aniocha South Constituency, and later in the House of Representatives from 2015, covering Aniocha North-Aniocha South-Oshimili North-Oshimili South.

Recently, Mrs. Mrakpor resigned from her position as commissioner for technical education to allow her brother to become the local government chairperson for Aniocha South.
