The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has warned that the Nigeria Police Force has identified foreign sponsors behind the planned nationwide protest set for August 1-10, 2024.

According to IGP Egbetokun, these sponsors have ulterior motives to cause violence and destruction across the country.

The IGP did not reveal the names of the suspected sponsors. He also emphasized that all groups planning to protest must register with the police in their respective states.

In a press briefing in Abuja, IGP Egbetokun stated, “We acknowledge the rights of citizens to protest. However, all peaceful protesters must be protected. Those who fail to meet the guidelines may have ulterior motives.”

The IGP further said that protesting groups must provide information about their intended venues, routes, and locations for proper coordination.

In preparation for the upcoming protests, the FCT Command of the Nigeria Police Force has deployed 4,200 personnel in the capital. SP Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT Police, explained that the deployment includes visible policing, the use of explosive ordinance devices experts, and increased patrols.

SP Adeh said, “This proactive deployment is aimed at ensuring public safety and preventing protests from being hijacked by non-state actors.”

FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth Igweh, urged residents to ensure their protests remain peaceful. He also vowed to resist any attempts at violent protests and to prevent damage to public and private property.
