Crude theft, maritime crimes have reduced in Niger Delta – Navy
The Nigerian Navy Ship Delta has reported a notable decrease in crude oil theft and maritime crimes in the Niger Delta region. The outgoing Commander of NNS Delta, Commodore Chindo Yahaya, made this announcement during a farewell parade at the Warri Naval Base.
Yahaya emphasized the positive changes in the operational areas, stating, “The negative trends have reduced drastically in its areas of operations.” The event included the signing of handover notes, lowering/hoisting of the pennant, presentation of the unit flag, and the inauguration of a car park at the base.
During his tenure, which began on May 2, 2023, Yahaya highlighted the successful efforts in tackling various challenges. He mentioned accomplishments such as the destruction of illegal refining sites and the arrest of sea pirates/robbers.
The outgoing commander shared details of anti-crude oil theft operations, revealing that suspects involved in crude oil theft and improper documentation were apprehended. Additionally, vessels engaged in illicit activities were seized and handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution.
Yahaya praised the collective efforts that led to a commendable reduction in crude oil theft and other maritime crimes.
He specifically highlighted the destruction of illegal refining sites and storage facilities, emphasizing the Base’s commitment to securing the maritime environment.
“The Base anti-crude oil theft operations have recorded success in the destruction of illegal refining sites in our areas of operations,” he stated.
During his tenure, the Base patrolled for approximately 21,630 hours, resulting in the deactivation of illegal refining sites and handling of stolen crude oil. The deployment of swamp buggies proved effective in discouraging illegal bunkering activities.
Commodore Muhsin Abba, the incoming Commander of NNS Delta, assured journalists that personnel would be encouraged to discharge their duties in line with the mandates of the Nigerian Navy.
He emphasized discipline, loyalty, and non-collaboration with activities undermining the country’s economic activities.
“As you know, oil is the mainstay of our economy, and anything that will impede on the production of oil within our areas of operations is going to be stopped. We will ensure that the mandate is pursued to the best of our ability,” Abba affirmed.
