The 60-year-old coach passed away on Friday, the same day as the opening ceremony.
According to officials, Fatupaito was treated by emergency services, but they were unable to save him. The local prosecutor’s office confirmed that he died of “natural causes.”
In a statement, the International Boxing Association expressed its condolences: “Lionel’s dedication and passion for the sport have left an indelible mark on the boxing community. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Our thoughts and prayers are with team Samoa and all those affected by this profound loss.”
