Brazil’s World Cup qualifying campaign suffered another blow as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Colombia, marking their second consecutive loss in this stage of the tournament.
The match, held at Barranquilla’s Metropolitano Stadium, witnessed a remarkable comeback by Colombia, orchestrated by striker Luiz Diaz.
Diaz emerged as the hero of the night, scoring two crucial headers that turned the tide of the match.
His father, recently freed from kidnappers, was among the jubilant spectators who witnessed his son’s feat from the stands. This victory marked Colombia’s first win over Brazil in World Cup qualifying in 15 encounters.
The scoring opened early, with Martinelli putting Brazil ahead in the fourth minute following a swift passing sequence involving Vinicius Júnior.
However, Brazil’s momentum was disrupted when Vinicius Júnior was forced off the pitch due to a left thigh injury. This setback stalled Brazil’s dominance and allowed Colombia to seize control of the match.
Colombia’s offensive strategy revolved around Diaz, who exhibited his prowess with a series of dribbles past Brazilian defenders. In the 30th minute, he threatened the Brazilian goal with two dangerous attempts, but both were thwarted by goalkeeper Alisson.
Diaz’s persistence paid off in the 75th minute when he effortlessly equalized with a straightforward header, without the need to leap. He then secured his brace four minutes later, capitalizing on a cross to seal Colombia’s impressive turnaround against Brazil.
